Miss Virginia International™ 2018

Shannon O'Brien

What is the difference between service and hospitality?
While service and hospitality may not be the same, they both come directly from the heart. As Miss Virginia, I feel fulfilled serving a community thinking about other people’s needs before my own. As a Delta Flight Attendant, I am honored to be able to serve our 180 million passengers a year who cross my path. Showing hospitality to the students I visit and my passengers from all walks of life is so rewarding. These opportunities have given me a return of investment worth more than currency and are some of the greatest memories of my life.

What do you think successful women have in common?
Each other! When we have other successful women in our corner that give us encouraging feedback and honest constructive criticism we build each other up. I am forever grateful for my Mom and the women in my family, mentors at the Trauma Survivors Network, professors at West Virginia University and the University of Maryland University College, directors and pageant sisters from Miss International, and coaches and teammates from the Washington Redskins Training Program and the Baltimore Ravens Playmaker teams for their positive influences. I am counting down the days to spend time getting to know the Miss International Class of 2018!

Do you find it easy to say ''no''?
Saying no is hard and saying yes is much easier said than done. I like to only commit to something I believe I can give my all. Our word is a promise we must keep and reflects our reliability. The job of a pageant titleholder requires a lot of commitment, awareness of our own limitations, and a balance between saying no and saying yes. If I didn’t say yes to opportunities I wasn’t sure would even work out, I wouldn’t be in pageantry today. It’s important for all of us to get out of our comfort zones, take chances, and seize every moment. I thank God everyday for directing my flight path, blessing me with supportive friends and family, and giving me faith that everything always works out in His timing.

If you had one more hour in every day, what would you do with it?
Reflect! If I could have an extra hour a day I would take time to reflect on something I could have done better that day. It could be a conversation or a moment to make a positive difference. I hope my future continues to open doors of opportunities to truly give my heart to people and places that inspire me to become a better version of myself, stay compassionate, and always remember that the present is a gift. When I reflect back on my life my hope is to leave a legacy of love, kindness, and integrity.

Tell us something you dream of doing. Why?
Become a bilingual spokesmodel for the Miss International Pageant system. My platform, Letters of Love, is an outreach initiative I founded that allows me to visit local students to write letters of thanks to our military, share hope with hospital patients, and respond to special requests. It would be such a blessing to continue visiting communities around the world and expand my platform Letters of Love to places where English is not a first language!
