Miss Alabama International™ 2018

Sarah Dunston

If you could teach a class in school, what would it be?
As a Business Analyst in the Private Bank, I am intensely focused on execution and detail; the difference in good and exceptional comes down to that last, critical 10%. Hospitality denotes how you perform a service. Hospitality is warmness, generosity, and congeniality. In a climate hyper focused on brand and authenticity, it is critical to interweave hospitality into all you do; it sets you apart as a leader among your peers.

Name one of your strengths and one of your weaknesses
Not only successful women, but all successful people, have grit. There is a fierce determination and perseverance that seems to exude from successful women and men, a mentality of self-motivation and unrelenting will. I truly believe the ability to utilize failure as a learning tool rather than an impediment to progress allows certain people to press on where others would have given up.

What qualities do you feel a titleholder should possess?
I endeavor to architect my life to support the priorities that are most important to me. I strive to be reflective and evaluative of my performance, pinpointing areas where I am not as effective as others. As a self-professed workaholic, it is difficult for me to refuse invitations to take on additional responsibility, but it is the understanding of how to leverage myself for the ultimate benefit that helps me to say no when required.

What makeup item could you not live without and why?
If granted an additional hour in every day, I would spend that time reading. To quote Warren Buffet, “That's how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest.” Through my work with a local London grade school reading initiative, I have experienced first had the power of literacy – increased self-confidence, enhanced public speaking skills, as well as limitless knowledge acquisition. It is also an escape, an outlet to travel the world without leaving the room.

Do you feel that beauty pageants help or hurt how society views women?
I dream of traveling to the South Asian regions of Bangladesh and Myanmar to cast a spotlight on the cross-border refugee crisis that is occurring and enact educational initiatives for those who have been displaced. As I will soon be based in Thailand, performing field research and completing my dissertation, I feel I cannot stand on the periphery as a generation of people grow up with no opportunity for a better life.
