Miss Maryland International™ 2018

Therese Kapange

What is the difference between service and hospitality?
The difference between service and hospitality is that Service is something you provide, in the assistance of others; For instance, I serve the homeless by providing meals during the holidays. On the other hand, Hospitality is how you treat people; For example, I invite my friends and loved ones over to my house on a regular basis and offer them meals that I have prepared, as we spend time together.

What do you think successful women have in common?
Successful women are listeners, observant and motivated. Being able to listen and observe others will enable one to avoid certain mistakes in life that can be impediments to success. For instance, successful business women listen to both the mistakes and success that other leaders have had. Therefore, they tend to implement that personís success and strategize their plans to avoid the same mistakes. They also network effectively to surround themselves with likeminded individuals who can help to mark their progress forward.

Do you find it easy to say ''no''?
For me, it is very easy to say no when I am invited to participate in something clearly negative like gossip or when taking on additional tasks that will spread me too thin, to the point where I am ineffective; however, it is far more challenging to say no to someone close to me, who is in need of financial support after losing a full time job, even when that monetary support will put me in a difficult position.

If you had one more hour in every day, what would you do with it?
If I had one more hour in every day, I would read more non-fiction books, to glean from the wisdom of those around me and to help see the world from othersí perspectives.

Tell us something you dream of doing. Why?
I want to follow through on my dream of creating a non-profit for young, underprivileged women who are interested in a rewarding career in the beauty industry. This would provide me with a platform to uplift, motivate, encourage and empower those young ladies to know their full worth and to say no to negativity. I desire to speak positivity into their lives, to uplift them with my personal story and offer a career pathway, because sometimes all we just need is someone to care and offer a viable opportunity.
