Miss Indiana International™ 2018

Joy Araujo

What is the difference between service and hospitality?
When I think of “hospitality,” what comes to mind is the kind-hearted nature that people possess naturally to make others feel welcome and valued. Service, to me, is an extension of this. Service is not as innate as hospitality, but is carried out with more intention. I may possess good old fashioned “Hoosier Hospitality” by nature, but my service efforts stem from hard work, sometimes even outside of my comfort zone, to serve.

What do you think successful women have in common?
All successful women undoubtedly have something in common—a strong sense of self. On the path to success, whether in personal relationships, family life or in the workforce, there are numerous potential pitfalls. It’s easy to get caught up in what other people think you should be doing or to let self-doubt creep in. Women with a strong sense of self are able to healthily persevere and therefore, reach the top.

Do you find it easy to say ''no''?
I don’t always find saying, “no” to be easy. It really is my personality to want to make people happy! However, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned that saying, “no” sometimes is necessary to prevent spreading myself too thin! I wish I could take every opportunity presented to me and help out every cause that could use me, but sometimes I just have to say, “no” and realize I can’t be superwoman!

If you had one more hour in every day, what would you do with it?
I would spend my 25th hour writing more poetry in my journal! I love to write, but between school, my volunteer service, being Miss Indiana International and running Donor Appreciation Network, poetry writing is relegated to once every few weeks! I would love an extra hour to hone my craft and get my pen to work!

Tell us something you dream of doing. Why?
I have a dream of one day performing one of my songs in front of a live audience! I love to write contemporary Christian music and produce them with my guitar/voice teacher, but I have never actually performed one of them for others to hear! It’s not much a matter of fear, but just of the right opportunity presenting itself.
