Miss Southeast International™ 2018

Mary Frances Flanders

If you could teach a class in school, what would it be?
While I love that I was raised in the south and hospitality is a true southern staple, my role as Miss Southeast International is one of humble service. Having the opportunity to serve others brings me the greatest joy and is my driving force not only throughout this year, but in life. The greatest treasure in life is being able to show love through service.

Name one of your strengths and one of your weaknesses
Successful women have faced adversity and utilized such to create opportunity, not just for themselves but to create paths for other women to succeed as well. Growing up with an alcoholic parent, I discovered power in pain. I witnessed other women rising through adversity, which empowered me to do so as well. Channeling pain into positive energy has been a guidepost for me for all of my future endeavors.

What qualities do you feel a titleholder should possess?
I have always been one to put others before myself and thrive off helping and serving others, which in turn makes saying no a difficult task. What motivates me is having the ability to inspire and empower others, as well as encourage all to live their truth. While saying no to mentorship opportunities as well as volunteer work may be nearly impossible for me; I have finally mastered a no to sweets.

What makeup item could you not live without and why?
If I had one more hour in every day, I would allocate more time to family, friends, and my fur babies. As a journalist, online student, and a spokeswoman for the organization, Facing Addiction, I devote a great deal of my time to not only my future, but also helping others. Having that extra hour would provide time for me to spend with those I love the most.

Do you feel that beauty pageants help or hurt how society views women?
Since becoming involved in Facing Addiction and having the opportunity to share my story, it has ignited my passion to help those struggling with addiction, along with their families, on a grander scale. It would be a dream to be on the Board of Directors within the organization. Ive found my voice through sharing my story and I dream of being able to perpetually encourage others to do the same.
