Miss New York International™ 2018

Shelbie Handville

What is the difference between service and hospitality?
Service stems from a sense of duty, or a “need to,” because the given task is required. Whereas hospitality stems from a sense of pride, of wanting to go above and beyond. Hospitality is making someone feel extra special, no matter the cost to oneself. My whole life I have worked at least part-time in the service industry, and the difference to me is glaring obvious.

What do you think successful women have in common?
There are the general traits, such as drive, keen intuition, and a phenomenal work ethic. Yet, I believe that a willingness to learn is the best trait a strong woman can have. These women understand that they do not know everything, and through learning, knowledge, and outside ideas, they can become stronger and better versed. These women have a willingness to educate themselves before making a decision or approaching a task.

Do you find it easy to say ''no''?
I, personally, do not find it easy to say no. I take a great amount of pride in the idea of “paying it forward.” I simply hope that for every “yes” I give, that same person will give a “yes” to someone else. Through this notion, I believe the world could be a truly spectacular place.

If you had one more hour in every day, what would you do with it?
I would invest it in myself, in the sense of focusing on my mental health and relaxation. I spend all of my time working, volunteering, running a business, and taking care of household responsibilities. Unfortunately, I have learned first-hand that stress and poor mental health can account for multiple health issues and even death. Sometimes in the hustle and bustle of life, people forget that now and then it is okay to put yourself first!

Tell us something you dream of doing. Why?
Working for myself and growing my business. I grew up watching my parents risk everything to start a business of their own. In this, some of their decisions worked out well, and some of them did not… Yet, something never changed, their sense of pride in themselves and their business. It truly is beautiful thing to witness. Lucky for me I have my parents blessing and guidance on this journey!
