Miss Delaware International™ 2018

Rachel Marlowe

If you could teach a class in school, what would it be?
Service implies providing a necessity or helping someone in need. Hospitality suggests service as entertainment or additional comfort. Service and hospitality are certainly not mutually exclusive, and perhaps we would better provide for each other with a more inclusive definition of the two.

Name one of your strengths and one of your weaknesses
Successful women have great sense of balance and perspective. Knowing where to work your hardest, where to take a step back, how to conserve your energy and put your efforts to their most efficient use is what sets successful women apart. Once an even balance and a healthy perspective has developed, every project, goal and action/reaction will fall into its most prosperous place.

What qualities do you feel a titleholder should possess?
As a teacher, I’m used to saying the word “no” in many creative ways! Some of my favorites are “Yes, but”, “How about” or “Instead, let’s try”. Of course, sometimes the actual word “No” is the only sufficient answer, but when other options are available, I try to use them. This allows everyone to feel heard, and to understand that there may be a better way to accomplish their task or ask their question.

What makeup item could you not live without and why?
I would sleep, and I’d encourage you to do the same! We often think of sleep as a luxury, where we should consider it an inviolate necessity. Our culture is one of constant progress and acquisition. While laudable goals in moderation, they can quickly overpower our body’s need to rest and repair. Adequate sleep leads to better heart health, and better immunity against sickness and disease, so fluff that pillow and silence that alarm!

Do you feel that beauty pageants help or hurt how society views women?
I have a pretty extensive bucket list, but at the top is learning to speak fluent Italian. Three of my four grandparents were 100% Italian, and some of my earliest memories were hearing them speak in beautiful melodies with words I didn’t understand. My ultimate goal is to spend a summer in Italy and trace my own family history, learn the language, immerse myself in Italian culture and, of course, eat the food!
