Miss Michigan International™ 2019

Katelyn Curthoys - Top 10

What is the First thing you notice about a person?
I would teach art. Iím a self-proclaimed Pinterest fanatic and DYI-er. I love to paint, make things for friends and family, and create gifts for my Make-A-Wish kids. Art is unique, expressive, and personal. I think itís important we have creative outlets for children. Art teaches us to not be afraid of failure as there are no wrong answers.

What goals do you have for the new 5 years?
I think for me, my strengths and weaknesses are often times one and the same. For example, Iím totally my own toughest critic and I set the bar high for myself. That can be great when it comes to running my business or reaching personal goals but can lead to negative thoughts and self-doubt if Iím not mindful.

What is the first thing you would do if you win the lottery?
When I envision someone having a successful reign as Miss International, I see a woman who is inspirational, kind, and unwavering in who she is (quirks and all). Whatís more, because the title holder would be participating in a number of events for charity, I believe a good candidate would have a proven track record of active volunteerism as well as a heart for humanity.

What is the most useless you have ever purchased?
I love playing with makeup as much as any other girly girl. However, donít be shocked if you catch me out of the house without any makeup on whatsoever. In Michigan, we tend to spend our summers on our many gorgeous lakes enjoying outdoor sports. If I werenít able to live without makeup, it would most likely interfere with my lifestyle. Iím a big believer in embracing your natural beauty.

What is the best way to spend a rainy afternoon?
To me, pageantry is doing the opposite of objectifying women. Rather, it strengthens and showcases a diverse group of inspirational women. I can only speak to my personal experience with pageantry and how positive itís been for me. The women Iíve had the pleasure of meeting through pageants have been some of the most well-accomplished, poised, and driven females Iíve known. Not only are they selfless leaders in their communities but they are also lawyers, models, business owners, or first generation college students. Modern pageants emphasize more than just beauty, with the interview portion typically being the most heavily weighted part of the total score. Interview answers must be articulate and thoughtful, all while emulating your personality and demonstrating your knowledge of current events.
