Monika Stewart - On-Line Voting Winner

Born in Flint Michigan on December 21, 1981, Monika Stewart's family relocated to Missouri City, Texas when she was just two years old and have lived there ever since. Monika graduated from Lawrence E. Elkins High School in 2000.

After graduation Monika took part in a summer internship for Harris County Precinct One called Summer Olympics. It was there that Monika's love of mentoring and children's programs began. Monika held the position of Outreach Worker/Youth Coordinator for three summers until she reached the maximum age at which she could intern. At that point, she continued to volunteer. Because of this experience and the passion she felt for children, Monika became a Psychology major with dreams of pursuing a career in Child Psychology. She will soon graduate from the University of Houston with a BA in Psychology and a Minor in Music.

Monika represented Houston in the Miss Texas International Pageant this past May. She saw the Pageant as a way to further her actions and passion for youth programs and hoped the position of Miss Texas would provide the necessary voice to take her actions to the next level.  On May 6, 2007 at the Scottish Rite Auditorium in San Antonio, Texas, Monika was crowned Miss Texas International 2007, the very first African-American Miss Texas International.

As Miss Texas, Monika serves as a spokesperson for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. During the coming year, she will travel the State, serve as key-note speaker at a number of Boys & Girls Clubs events, as well as in a number of other capacities including interacting and mentoring children one-on-one.
